I’ve been working my way through a lot of Grimm Fairy Tales, and I’ve had a hell of a blast with how much there is to this universe. Snow White vs. Snow White is one of the stories I wanted to spend a little more time talking about. You’ve got Sela Mathers dealing with Dark White, a living dark reflection of herself. That’s already a pretty loaded situation. Somebody coming after you is one thing. Somebody coming after you with your own face, connected to the darker part of who you are, brings a whole different set of questions with it. How do you separate yourself from that? At what point do you look at this other person and say that whatever she came from, she’s making her own decisions now? And how much would it mess with you to see somebody who looks like you doing things you’re trying to stop? Then Belinda is involved, which gives the whole situation another layer. There’s already history between these characters. They don’t need another version of Sela showing up and making everything more complicated, but that’s exactly what they get. The conflict reaches beyond Sela having to deal with her own reflection. And you’ve also got Binder and Slander connected to what happens. The book has a very real part in all of this. Characters can come out of it, recognize each other, and start making decisions that affect people outside of those stories. Once they’re out, everybody else has to deal with the consequences. That’s the part of Grimm that gives you so much to talk about. There are the familiar names everybody knows, but then you get into who these people actually are in this universe, what their relationships look like, and how all these different pieces connect. You can’t explain everything about Sela just by telling somebody she’s Snow White. This story gives you a lot to pick apart around that. Dark White has Sela’s face, but sharing a face doesn’t settle who either of them is. And with Belinda, Binder, Slander, and the book involved, there’s plenty to discuss beyond who wins a fight between the two of them.
