Story spoilers for Valhalla and Basim's place in the series. Assassin's Creed Mirage was honestly one of my least favorite games in the series. I still liked seeing more of the story, but Basim is one of my least favorite characters, and that affects how I feel about the game. He's the character who turns against Eivor near the end of Valhalla. His connection to Loki and his anger toward Odin are a big part of what's going on there. There's more to him than just calling him the evil guy, but that doesn't mean I have to like him. What I did find interesting was going back and seeing his history. Mirage takes place before Valhalla, in ninth-century Baghdad, when Basim is a street thief and then becomes involved with the Hidden Ones. You get to see him before the version of the character we already knew, including the visions and questions about himself that are following him through the story. The game also goes back to a smaller, more focused approach. Baghdad, the investigations, the stealth, the tools, and the assassinations take the lead instead of the enormous RPG structure of the previous three games. I can see what they were going for, even though it wasn't one of my personal favorites. I also went back for Valley of Memory. That's the free addition that takes Basim to AlUla after he hears that his father might still be alive. I liked getting more of that history and backstory, especially the connection to his dad. So this is one where I can appreciate what it adds to the series without putting it anywhere near the top of my list. Basim's story is worth understanding. He just isn't a character I connect with the way I do with some of the others.
