Assassin’s Creed Rogue is an important part of this stretch of the series because it connects several of the stories around it. It came out in 2014, and instead of following another Assassin all the way through, we follow Shay Cormac as he turns against the Brotherhood and becomes a Templar. That changes the position you’re in. The people using the familiar Assassin methods are now people hunting you, and Shay believes he has a reason to stop them. It gives the conflict a different perspective without changing the fact that both sides are still fighting over the same dangerous things. The game takes us through the North Atlantic, the River Valley, and New York during the colonial period. The Morrigan keeps naval exploration in the picture, but the colder setting and the ship’s own equipment give it a different identity from Edward’s Caribbean adventure. The naval side also connects with that old love I had for the original Uncharted Waters on the SNES. Getting another game where the ship was part of the adventure meant something to me. The Morrigan and those colder waters gave Rogue its own setting instead of simply sending us around the Caribbean again. Shay’s change of allegiance is also why the story needs more than a quick summary of him being the Assassin who became a Templar. The question is what happened to make him reject the people he had been working with. That’s the part of his story that explains how he ends up on the other side. It also connects back to the Kenway family and forward into Unity. That makes it worth keeping in the order even though its historical events happen before Connor’s main story. If you’re following how these games fit together, Rogue fills in a part of that history rather than being a completely disconnected side trip.
