Altaïr’s Chronicles is one of the smaller games I wanted to go back over because it’s easy to lose track of where these fit when you’re talking about the whole series. This one came out in 2008, originally on Nintendo DS. It takes place in 1190, before the first Assassin’s Creed, with Altaïr looking for the Chalice. So this isn’t the first game squeezed onto a handheld. It’s a separate adventure that goes back further in his story. The setup is different too. There’s more straightforward platforming, and the DS uses its touch screen for things like picking pockets and interrogations. You’re still climbing, fighting and sneaking around, but it was built around a very different kind of system. That’s the distinction I wanted to make with these smaller releases. They’re part of how the series grew, but they don’t all work like the main games. Altaïr’s Chronicles gives us another part of Altaïr’s story before we move into what happened after the original.
