Cheshire becoming the White Rook deserves its own post. Earlier, he explains how Wonderland gave him the form of a Cheshire. Hunting is a huge part of how he understands himself. But we've also watched him choose to stand beside Calie and protect her. Other Cheshires challenge him over that loyalty, because serving the White Queen doesn't fit what they think he should be. By the time we get to the White Rook, he's already spent all this time making those choices. That's what makes the change interesting to me. His place beside Calie has become part of who he is. We've seen Wonderland push people into these roles, and we've seen what happens when those roles take over someone's life. With Cheshire, I read this change alongside the loyalty he's been developing. The creature who talks about the hunt has also become someone this family can depend on. That's a lot more to unpack than a new title. How much of becoming the White Rook comes from the person he's already chosen to be? That's the connection I want to spend more time with.
