MASS EFFECT 2: SOLDIER, ADEPT, AND ENGINEER ME2 changes the rules. Most active powers share a cooldown within each character's own kit. Shepard using a power does not put the whole squad on cooldown, so coordinating squad abilities matters. Enemy protection matters much more, too. Shields, armor, and barriers usually have to come off before lifting or freezing effects fully work. That becomes especially important on the higher difficulties. Weapon restrictions are real here, including in Legendary Edition. All six classes can use heavy pistols and heavy weapons. Adept, Engineer, and Sentinel normally add SMGs; Infiltrator adds SMGs and sniper rifles; Vanguard adds SMGs and shotguns. Soldier gets assault rifles, shotguns, and sniper rifles, but not SMGs. A later weapon-training choice can expand or strengthen your options. SOLDIER Pros: A broad arsenal and Adrenaline Rush, which slows the action and strengthens your shooting. Disruptor and Incendiary Ammo help against different defenses, while Cryo Ammo can control exposed enemies. You can adjust your weapon and ammo choice instead of needing a different power for every situation. Cons: Much of your effectiveness comes from landing shots and managing ammunition. Your native powers do not give you the control options of a biotic or tech specialist, and using another active power competes with Adrenaline Rush's timing. Choose Soldier if you enjoy ME2 primarily as a tactical shooter. It is straightforward, but it still benefits from good squad support. ADEPT Pros: Singularity and Pull control exposed enemies, and Warp can detonate lifted targets for area damage. Warp is also useful against armor and barriers. Singularity can stagger many protected enemies even before it can lift them. Cons: Shields are the big problem. Your normal kit has no dedicated shield-stripping power, and protected enemies cannot simply be lifted out of the fight. You often need your weapon or a squadmate to remove protection first. Pistol-and-SMG restrictions also make weapon upgrades important. Choose Adept if you like setting up enemies for biotic attacks and coordinating the squad. Expect more preparation than ME1, particularly on Hardcore or Insanity. ENGINEER Pros: Overload handles shields, Incinerate handles armor, and Combat Drone distracts enemies and can pull their attention away from you. AI Hacking is useful against eligible synthetics once their protection is removed. This class has a practical answer to many encounters. Cons: Barriers are less comfortably covered by the native kit. You are not built for standing in the open, and your regular weapon selection is limited to pistols and SMGs. Drone placement and target selection matter. Choose Engineer if you want to dismantle defenses and control enemy attention rather than win every fight through raw gun damage.
