MASS EFFECT 1: SENTINEL, INFILTRATOR, AND VANGUARD
SENTINEL
Pros: Tech and biotics together. You can open locks, strip shields, disrupt weapons, lift enemies, and protect yourself with Barrier. That flexibility gives you more freedom when choosing squadmates.
Cons: This is not the Tech Armor tank from ME2. ME1 Sentinel has no armor talent and no dedicated weapon talent tree. Its class talent provides some pistol bonuses and basic Marksman, but not the full pistol progression available to other classes. You also do not get the Adept's Singularity or Warp as part of the normal kit.
Choose Sentinel if you want a versatile support character and are happy to trade weapon specialization for a broad set of powers. Legendary Edition's improved untrained gun handling makes that trade less restrictive.
INFILTRATOR
Pros: Sniper rifle and pistol training alongside useful tech powers. You can work on shields and weapons with Overload and Sabotage, handle Decryption and Electronics, and eventually wear medium armor. Fitness gives you access to Immunity, so this is not just a fragile sniper.
Cons: No Tactical Cloak yet. No biotic crowd control, either. You are a gun-and-tech specialist, and the early sniper experience in the original release is less forgiving than in Legendary Edition, which removes scope sway.
Choose Infiltrator if you want accurate ranged shooting without giving up technical utility. Do not choose it expecting the stealth loop from the sequels.
VANGUARD
Pros: Pistol and shotgun training, biotic control through Throw and Lift, Warp for weakening enemies, and Barrier for protection. You can also unlock medium armor. It gives you a useful combination of weapon damage and powers that make enemies easier to finish.
Cons: No Biotic Charge in this game. No tech skills, and not the full biotic selection of an Adept. Your trained weapons favor a different approach from the Infiltrator's long-range shooting, even though Legendary Edition lets you use other guns comfortably.
Choose Vanguard if you want to mix aggressive gunplay with biotics. ME1 Vanguard is a hybrid fighter, not yet the charge-across-the-room class people usually picture.
