The other side of all this is the Liddle family. Alice, Calie, and Violet are connected by family and by Wonderland. Each brings different circumstances and choices to that history, especially when the past is pulled into the present. Calie becomes the White Queen while still being Violet’s mother. Violet has to fight the Hatter’s pressure while still being someone with her own history. Dark Cheshire’s choices also complicate the identity others expect him to accept. That’s where the pattern becomes more than a list of recurring monsters for me. A name gives us an expectation. Then the character can live up to it, be trapped by it, or push back against it. I’m still reading the final stretch, so I’ll come back to this after #50. For now, that’s the question I’m following: how much room does Wonderland leave someone to choose who they become?
