The Hatter is the clearest example of the pattern I’m talking about.
Johnny and Violet bring different personal histories to the same recognizable identity. In #42, Violet also has to deal with multiple Hatter presences together, so even the idea of a single wearer doesn’t describe everything going on.
The pressure is toward surrender. Stop resisting. Let the identity take over. Violet’s fight puts the individual back into the question: what does she want, and how much control does she still have?
That’s why the different people who carry the Hatter identity matter to me. Violet brings her own history to it, and her resistance changes the story. The role has a past, but she still wants a say in its future.
The Hatter is the clearest example of the pattern I’m talking about.
