The other upgrade section in Innocence is Alchemy. It opens up farther into the story, and it isn't required for the two full-upgrade trophies.
Containers improves Odoris and Luminosa at the first level. The second lets you launch Luminosa with the sling, and the third lets you throw Somnum instead of keeping it only as a close-range escape option.
Instruments makes Ignifer useful for distracting enemies, then speeds up ammunition crafting, then lets a regular sling stone knock off an enemy's helmet. Knocking a helmet off and killing the person underneath it aren't the same thing.
The recipes themselves are introduced as the story moves along. You don't unlock every ammunition type by repeatedly using the sling or grinding kills.
The main thing to watch is what you're spending. Some crafted ammunition uses materials you also need for permanent upgrades. Luminosa and Somnum can be useful, but making them just to fill your inventory can leave you short on supplies for your equipment.
If you're working toward the platinum, increasing Pocket capacity early gives you more room to collect materials. Then pay attention to what you need for the sling and equipment rather than buying every available upgrade simply because it's there. You can still buy Alchemy upgrades you want; just know those aren't part of the trophy requirement.
And don't count on Chapter Select as an unlimited material farm. If you need to go back for the upgrade trophies, pick a chapter and continue forward from there instead of bouncing between chapters.
