PRAGMATA STORY AND ENDING DISCUSSION, 2/2
MAJOR SPOILERS FOR THE OPTIONAL ENDING AND UNKNOWN SIGNAL.
The extra ending detail comes from Unknown Signal. Finish its ten Hidden Chamber missions, collect the Black Box Mod from the final reward room, equip it, and finish the final boss and ending again. The mission unlocks also require the sector completion checks and enhanced bosses. Just having the Black Box in your inventory isn't the same as equipping it.
The important thing is what actually changes. You still get the main ending and Diana's scene on Earth. The addition is audio after that, with Cabin greeting someone who is traveling alone.
That leaves room for Hugh to have survived and returned to the Shelter. The Black Box's connection to dead filament is what makes that interpretation fit. But the game doesn't show Hugh and Diana reunited on Earth. It doesn't give you a new sequence where both of them walk out together, either.
So if someone tells you the optional ending fixes everything, be careful with that expectation. It adds a hopeful possibility. A possibility and a reunion shown on screen are two different amounts of closure.
There are two separate questions here. Does the extra detail change how you read Hugh's fate? It certainly gives you a reason to reconsider it. Does it replace the separation at the end with a fully resolved happy ending? No.
That's worth knowing before doing the whole postgame specifically for the story payoff. Unknown Signal has its own fights, puzzles, rewards, and completion goals. If you enjoy that side of Pragmata, there is more to work through. If you're only doing it because you were promised a big alternate ending, the actual addition is much smaller than that.
For the story discussion, keep the confirmed scene separate from the interpretation. Diana reaches Earth. The extra audio suggests somebody has returned to the Shelter alone. Hugh surviving is the implication, not a reunion the game shows us.
I'm still very glad I played Pragmata. The ending wasn't the result I would have preferred, but the story absolutely gave me a reason to care about that result in the first place.
