POST 5: Alternate Spider-Men, linked timelines and the Amazing films
The last major console and handheld run before Insomniac’s series included alternate versions of Spider-Man, Peter working across time with Miguel, and the Andrew Garfield movie era.
Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions (2010)
Platforms: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, Windows, Nintendo DS.
Four different Spider-Men lead the main game through different visual styles and combat approaches. The DS version is a separate exploration-focused side-scroller with Amazing, Noir and 2099, rather than all four of the main game’s Spider-Men.
Spider-Man: Edge of Time (2011)
Platforms: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS.
Peter Parker and Miguel O’Hara work across linked eras to prevent disaster. The DS version is a different side-scrolling adaptation.
The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
Platforms: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Windows, Wii, Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo DS, Wii U, PS Vita.
A movie-follow-up adventure returning the main version to free-roaming Manhattan. The Wii and 3DS versions omit open-world roaming, and DS is separate again. Wii U Ultimate Edition and Vita followed in 2013. The Gameloft phone game is a different adaptation.
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)
Platforms: PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Windows, Wii U, Nintendo 3DS.
Another film-inspired adventure with open-world crime-fighting in the main version. The 3DS version is separately developed. The Xbox One version did release, despite confusing prelaunch reports. The phone game is separate.
Those are the main older console, computer and handheld families I wanted to cover. There are also quite a few phone games and other odd corners of Spider-Man’s gaming history, so I wanted those accounted for too.
