Spoilers for Kuno’s family backstory, not the later Band of Bastards quests.
I was talking to Sir Kuno of Rychwald in Kingdom Come: Deliverance, and I wanted to take a minute to talk about his family story. There was a lot of tragedy there, and it really stood out to me.
This is the mercenary band you meet through Sir Radzig. Before they take you along, you have to prove yourself in a fight against Dangler. Kuno is the man leading them, and once you get talking to him, there is quite a bit behind how he ended up there.
His family had a title, but that certainly didn’t protect them from falling apart. His father was in love with the abbess of the convent that owned their castle. According to Kuno, his mother eventually set the property on fire. He and his sister Adela escaped, but his parents and younger brother died.
Then things got worse. Their cousin Adam of Drewitsch took them in, but he planned to marry Adela, with the remaining family estates becoming her dowry. Kuno objected and got thrown out. He was still a teenager, and mercenary work became his way forward.
That’s a hell of a history to put behind someone you meet in a side story. There is already enough tragedy in losing his family like that, and then he loses what was left of the life he might have gone back to.
I like that the game gives him that much detail. You can talk to him about something that happened long before Henry arrived, and suddenly there is a lot more to the character. He has an entire life behind him, including some pretty awful things, and you get to hear about it simply by taking the time to talk.
That was the part I wanted to post about. His family story caught my attention, and I thought it deserved more than just moving on to the next objective.
