POST 6 OF 7: THE TWO MASKS I WOULD BE CAREFUL ABOUT DESCRIBING AS ARMOR
Rufus, the elephant, is advertised as letting you survive one bullet. Earl, the walrus, is advertised as letting you survive two. The problem is that descriptions and behavior are not consistently reported across versions. The detailed community documentation flags implementation bugs in the original game, while older guides repeat the advertised extra-hit benefits.
So these belong in the list, but I wouldn't tell somebody to build a route around deliberately taking a shot. Test the version you're actually playing. Neither mask should be treated as protection against every form of damage, and a shotgun can put multiple projectiles into you.
That distinction matters with an older game. A list can repeat the words in the menu and still give you the wrong practical advice. For dependable progress, learning how to avoid the shot is a better plan than assuming the mask will absorb it.
