POST 1 OF 7: WHY THE MASK MATTERS I wanted to go through the masks in Hotline Miami because some make a pretty substantial difference, some are useful for a particular problem, and some are basically there to make an already difficult game even more ridiculous. This first breakdown is about Jacket's masks in the original game. The sequel changes the system considerably, so I'll cover that separately. There are 26 standard masks, including Richard, with Russell added in the console versions. That doesn't mean 26 separate characters. You're still playing Jacket, but the mask changes a particular part of his abilities or the way the level behaves. Richard, the rooster, is the default. No bonus and no unusual restriction. That makes it a useful baseline: if a route only works because another mask gives you extra speed or lethal punches, Richard makes you notice it. There is nothing wrong with sticking to the normal rules while learning a floor. Rasmus, the owl, helps reveal secrets. It's a collectible-hunting choice rather than a combat upgrade. If you're going back through a chapter looking for something you missed, that's a more sensible use for it than expecting it to save a run that's going badly.
