After a loss, try to identify the failure more precisely than “the boss was ridiculous.” Did the build struggle to damage one target? Were you losing health gradually before the boss? Did a recovery effect depend on enemies being available? Did you stop moving because the previous few rooms had been easy?
Those problems need different solutions. A single-target damage problem points toward attack or ability choices. Attrition suggests better recovery, safer positioning, or more selective optional objectives. Getting trapped repeatedly suggests practicing an exit route and saving an evade, rather than assuming another damage bonus will fix it.
Look at available deeds too. Their rewards can improve future starting conditions, including things such as health or extra resources. Pursuing a manageable reward gives an unsuccessful attempt some direction. That is different from grinding your campaign family skills and expecting those exact benefits to be active in Trials.
Hard and Insane extend the run, so a strategy that only survives the opening stretch needs to develop. Pay attention when a familiar attack stops clearing enemies quickly. That is a warning to reassess rather than keep trading damage as if nothing changed.
A couple of content notes: Family Trials itself was free. Ancient Spirits adds the two-form Yajouj’Majouj fighter specifically to Trials, along with other DLC items. You don't need that fighter to start. Steam supports online co-op in this mode, but platform and version differences mean you should check the version you're using before planning an online session.
This is the part of Children of Morta for experimenting with the combat after, or alongside, the campaign. I've also posted separate character strategy threads, so if you want more detail on how to use each character, the skills that work together, and the habits that help in combat, take a look at those too. Keep the mode distinction in mind when putting those ideas into a Trials run.
