Family Trials replaces the Story skill tree with talent choices as you level. Rune effects are folded into that system instead of dropping and being equipped exactly as they do in the campaign. That distinction matters when following an old character guide: a Story skill-point order is not a Trials shopping list.
A useful way to evaluate each choice is to ask three things:
1. What is doing most of my damage right now?
2. What is costing me the most health?
3. Will this choice help in a boss fight, or only against groups?
If basic attacks are carrying the run, an improvement to a skill you barely use may contribute less than it sounds. If one ability is doing the important work, look for choices that strengthen it or help you use it more effectively. But don't tunnel so hard on damage that your build collapses the moment an enemy reaches you.
The community's successful runs aren't all built the same way. In one Trials discussion, players describe a healing Whirlwind Joey setup; another reports success with John's strike-based damage alongside Spare Time and Lifelong Pal. Those are player-reported combinations, not proof that a specific item must appear for your character to win.
The useful lesson is to look for a repeatable sequence: deal damage, recover or protect yourself, and get back to dealing damage. If the build only works while you're surrounded by weak enemies, consider what happens when you're facing one durable boss with very little to hit between its attacks.
Also, separate “bad character” from “bad fit for the choices I made.” A character can feel completely different when the run supplies support for an ability you ignored in the campaign. That is a reason to experiment, not a reason to pretend every random set of talents is equally strong.
