Heaven's Strike calls down swords and adds area damage to his melee kit. Shield Slam damages and disrupts enemies near him. Shield Dash is an offensive movement option, but it uses an evade charge. Guardian's Rage gives temporary invulnerability with retaliation damage. These tools solve different problems, so using whichever button is ready can waste a useful opportunity. A reasonable room-clearing sequence is to let approaching enemies collect into a manageable group, use Heaven's Strike while they're together, and then deal with what survives. Keep the group in front of you. If it starts wrapping around your position, movement should come before another attack. Shield Slam can create the interruption needed to move away. That doesn't make it necessary to wait until you've already lost most of your health. If you can see the room closing in, use the opening while you still have room to act. For Shield Dash, decide where the charge will finish. Reaching a ranged enemy is useful; arriving next to that enemy with several others behind you and no evade available is a different situation. An attack that also moves you needs an exit plan. Against a boss, observe a cycle before spending everything. Use a recovery window for damage, then return to a position where you can read the next attack. Rage can protect an aggressive window or rescue a failing one, but its temporary protection still ends. Don't let the end of that window catch you ignoring the boss.
