Children of Morta: One of My Favorite Games of All Time
Children of Morta is one of my favorite games of all time. I love it. I love the gameplay, I love the combat, and the only complaint I have is that I wanted them to keep adding to it. More story, more dungeons, more stuff to do with these characters. They had something here that I would have loved to see keep growing.
For anyone who hasn't played it, you're following the Bergson family as they fight the Corruption spreading through their world. It's an action RPG with roguelite dungeon runs, and the different characters give you very different ways to handle the same fight. You've got sword-and-shield combat, archery, fast melee, magic, and heavier attacks. Changing characters changes how you need to think about the room in front of you.
That's a lot of room to work with. A fight that has you hanging back and watching your spacing with one character can have you looking for an opening to get right into the middle of it with another. There are different attacks, different ways to protect yourself, and different reasons to move. The combat is a huge part of why I love this game, and having that much variety within the same family gives the whole thing more to it.
The family is also part of how the game develops. You spend time with these people between runs, and the story gives them lives outside of whatever dungeon you're about to enter. Their home, their relationships, and the things they're trying to protect are part of the game. It gives all that fighting some context without needing to stop being a dungeon crawler.
Now, to be fair to the developers, they did add things after release. The planned development roadmap was completed, with additional content and the Fellowship Sanctuary online co-op update on PC. So when I say I wish development had continued, I'm talking about wanting more substantial expansions to the game. More of the story and more places to explore. I don't mean that they released it and immediately walked away.
I would have loved to have seen this kind of game get seasons, something along the lines of Diablo or Path of Exile. Give us another reason to come back, another set of dungeons, another piece of the world, another story to work through. Keep the things that made Children of Morta its own game and build on them.
There was so much here that could have supported more. I would have loved to see where they could take it.
Absolutely amazing game. It's an older one now, but it's still one I want to talk about, including the characters and how differently they play. I'll be doing a separate breakdown for each of them next.
