SCP-156: Reanimating Pomegranate
Object Class: Euclid
SCP-156 consists of exactly 181 pomegranate arils. Eat one, destroy one, or let one spoil, and a replacement appears. Destroy the entire batch together, and all 181 return where one was destroyed.
Eating one puts a person into an annual death-and-reanimation cycle. Vital functions stop at noon on September 21 and restart at noon on March 21. The cycle repeats.
During those months, their bodies don't decompose. Many develop injuries resembling torture wounds, while under observation. Most remember nothing afterward. Some recall a pale face and a dying pomegranate tree.
Repeated cycles bring worsening paranoia and fear of the approaching September death. Injuries become more severe. Some develop necrotic eye tissue that doesn't recover when the rest of the body revives. After enough cycles, a subject may restart physically without ever regaining consciousness.
This doesn't protect against other causes of death. The Foundation's investigation found one victim who had suffocated inside her coffin. Its first test subject briefly resumed vital functions after an autopsy, then died from the damage.
Containment includes secure storage for affected people during their dormant months. Being mistaken for permanently dead creates another danger entirely.
