SCP-149: The Blood Flies
Despite the name, SCP-149 is a breed of mosquito. Its bite carries an anomalous retrovirus, SCP-149-A, that changes regenerating human cells into fertilized mosquito eggs.
That means a person can become infected and start producing more of these insects inside their own body before they realize what's happening.
The early growths resemble cysts, especially around the sinuses and the lining of the esophagus. Inside those protective growths are mosquito larvae. Their development happens in hours, and by the time the victim feels the effects, the first generation has already matured.
The insects then emerge, mainly through the mouth and nose, and can go on to infect other people. Infection is fatal. The entry estimates a fifty-percent chance of infection from a single bite, rather than claiming every bite always transmits it.
The incident report shows how quickly that becomes a containment problem. One escaped mosquito infected several D-Class personnel. Most didn't report the contact. Within five hours, new insects emerged from the infected hosts and spread the infection to staff.
A doctor sealed four sub-levels, preventing the outbreak from reaching the entire site. The number of affected staff is withheld, and the incident led to a new emergency protocol. The file names that protocol without explaining what it involves.
SCP-149 is classified Keter. The contained insects are kept in sealed observation boxes with controlled oxygen and nutrient supplies.
There isn't a documented cure or rescue in this entry. The danger is the short delay between one unnoticed bite and a new generation of infected mosquitoes. The Foundation is dealing with an outbreak that can already be reproducing inside people while they still don't know they've been infected.
