SCP-144: Tibetan Rope to Heaven Object Class: Safe SCP-144 is a thin hemp rope running from a Tibetan monastery straight up toward an unexplained rock high above the Earth. It's only about 1.2 centimeters thick, but it supports people climbing it and has apparently survived for more than 1,400 years. The lower end is secured to a jade ring in the monastery. The upper end passes over the edge of an asteroid-like body the researchers call the Summit. They can see part of it through telescopes, but attempts to image its far side haven't produced a clear picture. The monks climb portions of the rope as a spiritual practice. Some climbers have disappeared over the centuries; the monks believe they may eventually return with greater understanding. The Foundation hasn't established that this is what happens to them. There's also a practical problem developing. The rope is moving upward by roughly 1.8 meters a year, with a slight acceleration. The monks periodically adjust its attachment, but only a few hundred meters remain available. Adding ordinary rope has been discussed, without resolving whether it could withstand the same conditions. Six D-Class personnel accepted an offer of release for reaching the Summit and returning. Four came back struggling to breathe. One fell to his death. The last hadn't returned when the report was written. A Foundation observer monitors the site, and restricted airspace helps keep it concealed. The entry leaves the destination unresolved. There's a physical route toward something the researchers can partially see, but their expedition doesn't establish what's waiting above. The monks and the Foundation approach it with very different expectations, and neither has supplied an answer that explains the missing climbers or the rope's continuing movement.
