SCP-140: An Incomplete Chronicle
Object Class: Keter
SCP-140 is a history book that keeps giving a dead civilization another chance. Every time its story expands, the evidence outside the book changes along with it.
The book itself is titled A Chronicle of the Daevas. It describes the Daevites, an ancient civilization associated with conquest, slavery, human sacrifice and working supernatural rituals. Its binding holds more pages than should physically fit, and readers tend to become fascinated with it even when the material makes them uncomfortable.
Writing fluids let it expand. Ink works. Human blood is especially effective. Defeats that supposedly ended the civilization get rewritten into setbacks, survivors regroup, and their history continues. Archaeologists then find matching artifacts in places they had already excavated.
Originally, the account ended with their destruction by Qin Kai's forces. After multiple expansions, it had carried their survival forward to Genghis Khan's conquests. Even that ending leaves important people and cities unaccounted for.
The Foundation keeps the book away from writing fluids and studies harmless unsigned reproductions. Other dangerous copies remain missing, and the contained book has expanded while sealed away without exposure. Its unknown author is also still being sought.
A later excavation left numerous casualties and required a missile strike. An anomaly designated SCP-140-2 remained loose afterward; the entry doesn't explain what it is. The threat has already produced consequences beyond changes on a page.
Basically, every extension gives this empire more time to develop, conquer and leave dangerous things behind. The Foundation's concern is how much of the present could change if that history keeps catching up. Containing one copy doesn't settle that problem while the others are still out there.
