SCP-139 begins as a missing-person case. By the final document, the person reading the case is the one being hunted.
Lucian Saxe was a Foundation security specialist who advised Site-97 on unusual methods of reanimation. In March 1978, ze spent a workday researching thaumaturgy, ley lines, and techniques involving Ways and Knocks. That night, Saxe left home and began a journey across the United States.
The records follow hir through Topeka and later sightings associated with Utah, Texas, and Arizona. Some interviewed civilians inexplicably call Saxe a traitor, despite investigators finding no leak of sensitive employment information. In an intercepted letter, Saxe describes intrusive surveillance and says ze is escaping somewhere the Foundation cannot follow. Ze also invokes the Serpent's Hand as a welcoming alternative.
The initial report calls this an unresolved disappearance. Its containment procedures are suspended, and extradimensional travel is only a suspicion.
Then the addendum changes the story. In April 1993, a structural failure exposes a human-shaped space inside Site-97's concrete foundation. Investigators find decomposed remains, a security keycard, a ritual for preserving a spirit after death, and a ley-line map marked near Tucson. Saxe is believed to have died of dehydration after days trapped inside. A neighboring cavity contains what may be more than a thousand human eyes, positioned to watch through openings in the concrete.
The third document explains that this was not an accidental destination. The O5 Council unanimously approved rerouting the Tucson ley-line bridge into the site's foundation. The archived procedures describe Saxe being tracked and hounded. The updated procedures reveal that hir spirit survived and escaped after the structural breach. Site-97 is still trying to neutralize it.
The opening login uses Saxe's credentials, dormant for 5,540 days. As the final document unfolds, logout repeatedly fails and the system directly threatens the reader as Lucian. The apparent investigation is part of a trap: the records reveal what happened while making clear that Site-97 has found its target again.
