SCP-129 is a group of fungi that can take turns making your body easier for the others to infect. The really bad sign is when you start feeling better.
The first stage can pass for a cold. A third species changes the body's fluids to accommodate further infections, bringing a lingering cough, fever, excess mucus, and odd changes in taste. Most cases never reach the later stages. At least 98% of people have natural immunity to one or more of the fungi.
That protection has limits. Three more species can establish themselves, and catching all three leads to weeks in bed. The apparent recovery afterward is Stage Four: the fungi have spread through the body's systems. Some hair is replaced by contagious fungal filaments. Patients can feel energetic and become more resistant to other infections while shedding the infection.
The final stage varies. One recorded victim burst into spores on a train. Missing people elsewhere were found transformed into flesh-and-vegetation masses in a cave. The explanation for their gathering there remains a theory. The Foundation focuses on treatment and eradication, with strict quarantine for advanced outbreaks.
The apparent recovery is what makes this especially nasty. Someone can feel ready to return to their life while becoming more dangerous to everyone around them. The improvement isn't fake from the patient's perspective. It just doesn't mean what recovery normally means.
And the later outcomes don't all look alike. Recognizing one outbreak wouldn't necessarily prepare the responders for what they find in the next.
