Bloody Bones: the nightmare behind Arcane Acre
Spoilers through the end of the original Grimm Fairy Tales series, issue #125. Nothing past where I’m reading.
I just finished this part of Bloody Bones’ storyline, and he got an ass-whooping. At least as of where I’m at right now. But there’s quite a bit behind this guy, and I wanted to give him his own breakdown rather than just mention him while talking about Arcane Acre.
Because when you get into what he actually is, the whole thing gets pretty messed up.
Where he came from
A big part of his history comes through Maka and her sister Druanna. And it matters that these are two different people, because Maka killed her sister, took her place, and manipulated Sela into freeing Bloody Bones.
The history in issue #119 goes back much further than that, to when Druanna was still alive. Maka wanted to reveal herself and her sister to humanity and rule over people. Druanna opposed her. Their conflict ended with Maka defeated and stripped of her power, but still alive.
Maka then took something Druanna understood about humanity and went in a completely different direction with it: fear. People feared aging and death. She reached into those fears, and Bloody Bones emerged.
But even Maka doesn’t describe that as simply creating a monster from nothing. According to her, he was already there in people’s minds and nightmares. She gave him a way into the world. She calls herself the vessel through which he emerged rather than his mother, and she becomes completely devoted to him.
That makes their relationship pretty disturbing on its own. This is someone who wanted to rule, ended up defeated, and then found something so terrible that she decided serving it was the answer. By the time Shang is interrogating her, she would rather suffer than betray him.
Maka also connects him to magic coming into Earth and describes his ultimate goal as drawing humanity’s dreams together into a dreamscape. That’s her account of him, and she is hardly an unbiased person. But it gives you the scale of what she believes she helped bring into the world.
What makes him dangerous
Bloody Bones feeds on nightmares. He can get at people through the place where they’re supposed to be able to rest, and the things they’re already afraid of become part of the danger.
Put that around a school full of young people who are still figuring out their abilities, their relationships, and everything that has happened to them, and you’ve got a pretty horrible situation. Arcane Acre is meant to give them somewhere to learn. Having something like this working its way into their nightmares makes even that place unsafe.
And he has a physical presence to match it. The long limbs, the claws, the teeth, that almost skeletal body. There isn’t much about him that looks remotely human. You can understand the threat before he even starts explaining himself.
The nightmare side also means you can’t treat him like somebody who just needs to lose a fistfight. You have to deal with what he can do to people mentally, what he can feed on, and how much stronger he can become if he gets what he wants. By the end, this has grown well beyond a problem for Sela and her students. It takes people from across the realms coming together to face him.
Skye changes things
One of the important turns comes when he tries to consume Skye’s power. It hurts him instead. In issue #121, he’s choking on what he took from her, his body is deteriorating, and Skye attacks him directly.
That’s a major change in the situation. Up to that point, he’s been preying on the students. Now there’s someone among them who can genuinely hurt him, and he has a reason to fear getting close to her.
It doesn’t make everything easy from there. It does mean the kids have a part to play beyond waiting for Sela or the other adults to rescue them. With a villain built around feeding on their fears, that matters.
How they finally stop him
By issue #125, the students have already put up a fight before the adults arrive. But the answer to stopping him comes down to Skye and Violet together. Skye explains that the Convergence drew power from both Wonderland and the Shadowlands. They need both sides of that power to deal with him.
Their first combined attack actually works. They join hands, hit him together, and trap him in their energy. Then everything goes sideways around them. Warlord comes for the Reaver, Belinda confronts him, and her sacrifice breaks Skye’s concentration. Bloody Bones gets his opening.
That’s part of what makes this ending so rough. There are several fights happening at once, and somebody’s loss in one of them can change the outcome of another. Skye is trying to do something enormous while people she cares about are dying around her.
When Bloody Bones gets loose, he goes after her. Sela steps in, and he turns on Sela instead, lifting her up and draining her. He’s ready to take her power in place of the children’s.
Sela uses that moment to grab him and tell Skye to act. And Skye has to make that choice with her mother right there in the middle of it. Violet knows they can’t let the opportunity go. Together, the girls unleash their power again, with Sela holding on to him.
So when I say he got an ass-whooping, there’s a lot wrapped up in that. The students fought him, Skye proved he could be hurt, and Skye and Violet were the ones who could bring the necessary power together. But Sela still had to put herself in his hands to make the final attack happen.
They banish him, with Sela holding him in place and disappearing with him. That’s the outcome here, not the students simply beating him to death. Sela is part of the price they pay to stop him.
That’s where I’m stopping with him for now. I’ve finished this part of the story, and I’m not pulling in anything from after it. Bloody Bones goes from something feeding on nightmares to a threat that takes this whole group to bring down, and the end of his attack changes what’s left of Arcane Acre. He gets stopped, but nobody gets to walk away and pretend this was just another day at school.
