7/9 The pursuit of Rachel then draws the Hellfire Club and X-Men into another confrontation. Selene hasn't decided to leave her alone. In #208, she uses the ground itself to restrain Rogue while the Inner Circle tries to claim Rachel. Then Nimrod enters the fight, and being a member of the Hellfire Club offers no protection. The machine targets mutants regardless of which side they belong to. The X-Men and Inner Circle have to deal with a threat capable of killing them all. Von Roehm's devotion to Selene doesn't save him. He dies during the battle, and Harry Leland also dies. Selene remains alive, but the group around her has taken real losses. This matters when looking at her strength in these early stories. She's dangerous, experienced, and has more than one way to attack somebody. She still operates in a world where other powers can overwhelm her side. The characters around her aren't protected by her reputation, and the Hellfire Club can't simply intimidate its way out of every fight.
