Before Australia, there's Dallas and the Fall of the Mutants. Betsy is one of the X-Men who give their lives to stop the Adversary. Roma restores them, but the world believes they're dead, and the team takes advantage of that to operate from the Reavers' old Australian base.
That also puts distance between Betsy and Brian. From his side, his sister is gone. From hers, she's still alive and part of a team deliberately keeping that secret.
The family history is one of the reasons I wanted the earlier material. Brian isn't just some other superhero she happens to know. He's her twin. Jamie is her older brother. There's an entire life around that family before the X-Men, and the decision to remain dead to the world has consequences outside the team.
By this stage, she's been through the British stories, Mojo, joining the X-Men, and the team's apparent death. There's already a substantial character there before the next change.
(Uncanny X-Men #227; Captain Britain/Betsy Braddock history.)
