Days of Future Present brings Rachel's past into another painful collision with the people living here. The adult Franklin Richards is somebody she loved in her future. The Franklin growing up in this world hasn't lived that relationship. Ahab brings the Hound threat back into her life during that story too. Even here, people can be turned into hunters and used against their own families. Rachel has to confront it alongside people who are only now finding out what her future was like. Jean is alive now too, but meeting her doesn't immediately give Rachel the mother she lost. Jean has her own history with Phoenix and a life Rachel can't simply step into. Their first meeting is difficult for both of them. Those encounters keep making the same practical problem clear. Rachel knows these people in ways they don't know her. She has memories of loving them and losing them, while they have to decide how to respond to someone arriving with all of that already attached. Excalibur gives her relationships she can build in the present, with people getting to know the Rachel in front of them. She still has the Hound memories, her family history and the Phoenix to deal with. She also has teammates who want her there, and a life that can include more than trying to prevent the future she escaped.
