Rogue's first published appearance is Avengers Annual #10, and she makes a pretty awful first impression. She's working with Mystique's Brotherhood, and what she does to Carol Danvers changes both of their lives. She absorbs Carol's powers and memories, but they don't wear off the way an ordinary use of her power would. Carol is left badly damaged, and Rogue ends up with strength, flight and somebody else's memories in her head. So when you see Rogue flying around and throwing heavy things, those abilities have a history attached to them. Her own mutant ability is the absorption. The familiar Ms. Marvel abilities came from hurting another person. That matters when she eventually asks the X-Men for help. Carol is their friend. Wolverine knows her. Rogue has also fought the team. They have actual reasons to distrust her, and she can't expect them to forget everything because she's now in trouble herself.
