After Secret Wars, Colossus comes back with feelings for Zsaji and ends his relationship with Kitty. She gets hurt badly, while he has his own grief over someone she never even met. Then her trip to Japan becomes another disaster. She follows her father into trouble and ends up under Ogun's control. He changes her mind and turns her against Wolverine. Logan helps her recover and trains her to fight back. There's a separate story to get into there, because the whole miniseries deserves the space. For Kitty's progression, the important part is that she gets through it and comes back as Shadowcat. The training stays with her, along with what she's learned about being controlled and having to recover from it. She can still be stubborn and impulsive. She's also gained skills she can use when phasing alone won't solve the problem. And her relationship with Wolverine now includes something they went through together that very few of their teammates fully understand.
