After the Brood ordeal, Xavier wants Kitty with the New Mutants. She's younger than the other X-Men, and he sees a training group that seems more appropriate for her.
Kitty is furious. She's already been through the Hellfire Club, the demon in the mansion, Magneto and the Brood. Being sent to the junior team feels like all of that has been ignored.
Uncanny #168 gives you her trying to convince him, followed by another actual emergency when the Sidri are discovered in the mansion. She gets involved, Lockheed helps, and Xavier changes his mind about her place on the team.
Lockheed is another part of her life that starts during the Brood story and comes home with her. A little alien dragon could easily have been a one-story novelty. Instead he's right there with her through fights, injuries and the move to England. He's protective of her, and she's just as protective of him.
