Peter Nicholas gets something Piotr rarely manages to have: an ordinary life built around his art.
After the Siege Perilous, he turns up in New York without his old memories and becomes a painter. He also gets involved with Callisto, whose appearance Masque has changed.
There's a lot going on around that relationship that Peter doesn't understand. The Morlocks and Masque are still involved, and both Peter and Callisto have lives that haven't simply stopped existing because their circumstances changed.
But the artist part is important. It was already there when he was an X-Man. Given a different set of circumstances, that becomes the center of his day instead of something he tries to fit in between missions.
He's recognizably connected to Piotr even without knowing his own history. The question is what happens when that history catches up with him, because people who know Colossus can still find him. And having no memory of those people doesn't make them harmless.
