During the Mutant Massacre, Colossus kills Riptide. By that point, people have been slaughtered around him and his friends are being badly injured. He gets hold of one of the men doing it and breaks his neck. Then Piotr starts talking about wanting to do the same to the others. Storm hears that and is disturbed by how much anger is coming out of someone she knows so well. He's badly damaged himself. In #212, the injuries to his metal body become a medical emergency. Magneto uses his powers to repair the damage, but Piotr is left paralyzed afterward. So the team has three familiar members in terrible condition: Kurt unconscious, Kitty unable to become solid, and Piotr unable to move. The steel body hasn't kept him safe from all of this. In fact, it creates a problem that needs someone who understands that body specifically. You can't treat him like an ordinary wounded man, and changing back isn't a simple solution either.
