Xavier finds Colossus working on a farm in the Soviet Union. Piotr can turn into a man made of metal, but he isn't out looking for enemies to fight. When his sister is in danger from a runaway tractor, he changes and saves her. That tells you a lot before he ever puts on the costume. Protecting someone is what gets him moving. Joining the X-Men means leaving his family and the life he understands because other people need help too. His body becomes organic steel. It isn't a suit he puts on, which becomes especially important whenever something damages that form and he can't safely change back. The strength makes him an obvious choice when the team needs somebody to stand in front of a threat. His personality is quieter than that job suggests. He likes drawing and painting, he misses home, and he doesn't particularly enjoy hurting people. Then he joins a team that regularly needs him to hit something very hard. That can put him in situations he never would have chosen for himself.
