Excalibur gives Kurt and Kitty somewhere to go after all of that. Rachel's return brings them together with Brian Braddock and Meggan, and they end up building a team in Britain.
It's a very different group to live with. Brian and Meggan have their own relationship and problems, Rachel has already been through far too much, and Kurt and Kitty are carrying what happened to the X-Men.
Then they're dealing with the sort of bizarre adventures that can involve another world as easily as another town. Kurt's ability to improvise fits that well. He can be funny in the middle of something strange without forgetting that they still need to get everyone home.
He also has to deal with his attraction to Meggan. She's involved with Brian, so Kurt's personal feelings create complications inside a team that's already living and working closely together.
The early Excalibur stretch gives him room beyond being one member of Xavier's much larger cast. There's more responsibility, more time with Kitty and a group that needs his experience, even when the whole situation has gone completely sideways.
