The Beyonder badly shakes Kurt's faith. When somebody with that much power turns up, Kurt has questions that aren't solved by being told to get back to work. His Catholic faith is part of his life, and so are the jokes, flirting and adventures. Having doubts doesn't erase the belief, any more than believing means he's never going to struggle with what he sees. Uncanny #204 puts him in another situation where someone needs help while he's dealing with his own problems. Judith Rassendyll gets caught up in Arcade's game, and Kurt goes after her. That lets him do something useful instead of spending the entire issue arguing with himself. He has to pay attention, work out what Arcade is doing and get someone through Murderworld. He's also had experience taking responsibility for the X-Men when Storm isn't there. Being good company doesn't mean he's only there to lighten the mood. When things become dangerous, other people are depending on his judgment.
