X-Men Annual #4 gets into Kurt's family history through a pretty awful misunderstanding. Margali believes he's responsible for her son Stefan's death, and she puts him through a version of Hell to punish him.
Kurt did kill Stefan, but the circumstances matter. Stefan had become violent, and their history includes a promise Kurt made to stop him if that happened. Margali has judged him without knowing the full story.
Amanda turns out to be Jimaine, Margali's daughter, the girl Kurt grew up with. So the woman he's been dating also has a history with him that he hasn't understood.
