Wolverine and Nightcrawler work well together because Kurt can spend time with Logan without turning every conversation into a fight over his attitude. They joke, drink and go places together. Kurt gets to see the friend as well as the angry man everybody has to manage on missions.
The Canada trip in #139–140 is a good early example. Kurt accompanies him when Logan tries to straighten things out with the people he left behind, and they end up dealing with Wendigo.
Colossus is part of that friendship too. The three of them can have an ordinary evening out, at least until an ordinary evening turns into a superhero fight.
Kurt doesn't have to become as aggressive as Logan to be comfortable around him. And Logan doesn't need Kurt to agree with him about everything.
Those friendships give the team some life between disasters. You can believe these people would choose to spend time together even if Xavier wasn't waiting to send them on another mission.
