Nightcrawler's introduction has a whole town trying to kill him. Xavier finds Kurt surrounded by people who have decided what he is by looking at him, and gets him out before they can finish the job. Then you actually spend time with the man. He jokes, flirts, loves an adventure and wants to enjoy himself. The people chasing him never bothered to find any of that out. His circus background matters immediately. He's an acrobat before he's an X-Man. The tail, the way he climbs and the way he moves aren't just things an artist added to make him look unusual. He uses all of them. Teleporting makes that movement even harder to deal with. Kurt can get out of reach and attack from somewhere else before an opponent has adjusted. But the circus performer is still doing the work between those jumps. He arrives with a life and skills already behind him. Xavier gives him somewhere safer to use them, and people who might actually get to know him.
