By the end of the Shadow King fight, Storm has been through losing her powers, getting them back, losing her adult body and recovering that too. She's led the team from the mansion, through Dallas and Australia, and back into another crisis with Xavier. There are still recognizable pieces of the woman from Giant-Size X-Men #1. Her connection to the natural world, her care for people and that fear of being trapped are still there. But she's had to make choices that the woman Xavier first met hadn't faced yet. She's also learned a lot about the people around her. Callisto becomes someone who can challenge her honestly. Forge becomes someone she loves and has serious reasons to distrust. Gambit meets her when she's vulnerable and helps her anyway. That's a lot of history for a character who can sometimes get reduced to being the one who calls down lightning. Some of her biggest decisions in this whole stretch happen when she can't call down any at all.
