Storm has already had several very different lives before Xavier finds her in Giant-Size X-Men #1. She's been an orphan in Cairo, a thief, and a woman people worship because she can bring them rain. Then Xavier asks her to leave and help rescue a bunch of people she's never met. Her childhood explains something that keeps coming back even when she's one of the most powerful people in the room. Her parents died when their home collapsed, and she was trapped under the wreckage with them. Enclosed spaces can still bring her right back to that. So when the X-Men end up buried, trapped underground or shut inside something, Storm has a problem the others don't necessarily have. Being able to control the weather doesn't automatically let her control that fear. And the thief part of her life matters too. Long before the costume and lightning, Ororo had to learn how to survive with whatever she had available. The books eventually put her in a position where she needs those skills again.
