Logan has history with Ogun that Kitty doesn't. That makes him useful, but it also makes this personal in ways he has to deal with himself. Defeating an old teacher doesn't erase what that teacher once meant to him. Kitty has to cope with skills and experiences she never asked for. She doesn't come out of this by pretending none of it happened. She comes out with a new name and a much stronger ability to stand up for herself. Neither of them could get exactly what they needed from a simple rescue where Wolverine arrives, kills the villain and carries her home. Kitty has to take part in getting herself back. Logan has to let her, even while trying to keep her alive. Their relationship has more room for that by the end. He can teach her things she needs to know, and she can tell him when he's judging himself too harshly. He doesn't have to have every answer for her to trust him.
