Mariko gives Logan her family's honor sword after Shingen's death. She also tells him what she had been prepared to do about her father herself. She has recognized what Shingen has done to the family. That matters because Logan can't settle her entire life by winning a fight. She has to reach her own judgment about her father and about him. The miniseries finishes with their engagement and an invitation going out to the X-Men. After all the drinking, manipulation and killing, Logan is making plans for a life with somebody. He wants that. He wants Mariko, and he wants to be able to live with himself. Yukio accepting his worst behavior doesn't make those wants disappear. Neither does Shingen telling him he's incapable of anything better. These four issues give him plenty of chances to behave badly. They also let him think about it, change what he's doing and try again. Being dangerous doesn't remove his responsibility for his choices, and it doesn't mean every choice has already been made for him.
