Wolverine's first miniseries starts with him hunting a bear. The bear has been killing people, but when Logan finds out what happened to it, there's a human being responsible too. Somebody wounded it with a poisoned arrow and left it suffering. Logan kills the bear, then goes after the hunter. He turns the man over to the authorities. That's worth keeping in mind through the rest of these four issues. Logan is violent, and he knows it. But he can also look at something dangerous and recognize how it got that way. He can decide who is responsible and stop short of killing that person. Then he gets to Japan, and Shingen starts working on convincing him that none of that matters. That underneath everything, he's just an animal. The opening has already given us a reason to question that before Shingen ever says it.
