The rest of #139 matters to that change too. Kitty is joining, Storm is taking charge after Scott leaves, and the team is still dealing with Jean's death. Wolverine and Nightcrawler head to Canada so Logan can try to straighten things out with the people who still think they have a claim on him. He's got his own history to deal with, and Kurt is going with him. That gives us more time with them together outside the usual team mission. Put that beside the Proteus issues and you get quite a bit of development in a fairly short stretch. More detail about Logan's abilities, a serious limit to what he can handle, some actual trust between him and Scott, and a different look. None of that requires going back through the Hellfire Club fight again. There's plenty happening around it.
