Warlock keeps helping the team after Doug is gone. Then X-Tinction Agenda puts him in Genosha, where Cameron Hodge wants to take his shapeshifting ability for himself. Being transported through Pipeline has left Warlock dangerously depleted. In New Mutants #95, he still uses what he has to help his friends escape. He's not strong enough to survive what Hodge does to him. The attempt to take his power ends with Warlock dead. Later, the others recover his ashes, and those ashes are scattered over Doug's grave. Hodge has spent this story treating mutants as things to control, use and destroy. Warlock is the alien who barely understood humanity when he arrived, and he's the one still trying to save his friends while he's dying. By the time I'm reaching Muir Island, both halves of that friendship are gone. Warlock came to Earth because he didn't want to kill anyone. He found people who accepted him, learned to care about them, and used the last of his strength trying to get them out alive.
