Doug Ramsey first shows up in New Mutants #13 as Kitty's friend, and he's already helping her get into computer systems she probably shouldn't be getting into. They're trying to look into Sebastian Shaw. They end up causing trouble with a government Sentinel operation without Doug really knowing how deep into X-Men business he's gotten. Kitty knows more than she's telling him. He's good with computers, he gets along with her, and he doesn't yet know he's a mutant. It's a fairly ordinary introduction compared with the people arriving at Xavier's after somebody tried to kill them. His mutation is language. He can understand forms of communication that would be impossible for somebody else to figure out that quickly, including computer languages and alien speech. The obvious problem is that this doesn't come with armor. Understanding what somebody is saying doesn't stop them from hitting you. Doug spends a lot of his time on this team knowing exactly how much more vulnerable he is than the people beside him.
