Then Leong and Nga disappear, and being on a superhero team stops being Shan's priority.
In New Mutants #54, she's looking for information through the Hellfire Club, even possessing Tessa while trying to find answers. Magneto says he's already searched. That doesn't give Shan her family back.
So she leaves the team to keep looking for them. She writes a letter rather than turning it into some big fight with everybody. She's got responsibilities that don't disappear just because she's wearing a New Mutants uniform.
Her search puts her back in the orbit of Uncle Coy in Madripoor. He has money and connections that might help, which gives him leverage over her. She's working around a man she knows is dangerous because she needs something she can't get on her own.
That doesn't mean she's suddenly fine with what he's doing. During the early Wolverine Madripoor stories, she helps Patch and Tyger Tiger even while she's caught up in Coy's operation. She's trying to find her siblings without becoming the person her uncle wants her to be.
Then Leong and Nga disappear, and being on a superhero team stops being Shan's priority.
