Shan is one of the original New Mutants and their first leader. She's older than the others, and she already knows what it means to have people depending on her. That doesn't make her safe. After the team's encounter with Viper and Silver Samurai in New Mutants #6, she disappears and is believed dead. When she turns up again in the gladiator storyline, something is seriously wrong. The person using her body is controlling people and making them fight. Her friends are looking at somebody they thought they'd lost, apparently doing things she never would have done before. The answer is the Shadow King. He has taken her over and used her body for his own appetites while keeping her trapped inside it. By #34, the team helps free her from him, but she doesn't just walk away unaffected. There's something especially cruel about doing that to Karma. Her own mutation lets her take control of other people, and now she's been forced to experience being helpless inside her own body for an extended stretch of time.
